La Roche-Courbon Castle, Saintonge in France
-
At the beginning of the 20th century, La Roche Courbon awakened like the sleeping beauty
following a call of the French writer Pierre Loti to salvage it.
-
Mr. Paul Chénereau undertook this herculean task.
He restored the house and recreated the formal gardens according to the ancient plans.
-
As the gardens were sinking in the underlying swamps,
his son-in-law went on a titanic work: lay the gardens on piles.
-
Now the house, built on a former medieval stronghold,
and the gardens have regained their splendor of yesteryear (17th century).
They radiate a charm hard to find elsewhere.
