Marksburg Castle, Rhineland in Germany
-
The Romantical part of the Rhine valley is famous for its medieval castles.
Marksburg is the most oustanding and one of the largest.
It is inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List.
-
Located south of Coblenz, where Mosel and Rhine merge,
the castle is perched on a peak dominating the valley.
Never was it conquered nor destroyed,
nor did it suffer from tasteless restorations in the 19th century.
-
It grew from a feudal fortified center into a fortress able to counter artillery fire,
and hosts now the main office of the German Castle Association.
-
Inside, one discovers the way of living during the Middle Age,
the heroic time of the chivalry and of Parsifal,
while the ancient gods were dying out below along the misty Rhine.
