Villa La Rotonda, Veneto in Italy
-
The history of architecture offers a few revolutionary milestones.
So were the Cistercians in the Middle Age with their churches,
the beauty of which derived from their sobriety.
-
So was Palladio in the Renaissance and up to the Romantics
as the influence of his ideas pervaded not only in his native Italy
but also in the anglo-saxon architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries.
-
No other of his works synthesizes better his style than La Rotonda, to the south of Vicenza.
It is inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List.
-
Inside, superb frescoes decorate the impressive cupola.
-
The Villa was bought in the early 20th century by Count Valmarana,
whose family restored and maintained it impeccably up to this day.
-
This influential family of the Venetian Region has a long record artistic patronage,
especially for Palladio, who built for them two villas north of Vicenza
as well as a superb palace and a chapel, both in Venice.
